Choosing a Safe Locksmith
A good personal safe is one of the greatest security investments you can make, but the wrong safe can actually make it easier for thieves to make off with your valuable items. If you’re looking for a personal safe or need assistance with the one you already own, the qualified safe locksmiths at Access Key Security can help.
Which Safe Rating Is Right For Me?
When you’re shopping for safes, you may notice that many list a rating. This is generally some mix of letters and numbers, and it can be confusing at first. Two of the most common ratings are B and C, which are simply industry classifications describing how the safe is constructed. B class safes are the lowest security levels, while C class safes have higher standards. B rated safes will have at least 1/4-inch thick body metal and 1/2-inch thick metal in the door. C class safes will generally be double that.
If you’re buying a gun safe or residential security container designed to store valuable or important items, you may want to look for one that’s a little more highly rated. If you’re worried about your valuables being stolen, look for Underwriters Laboratory TL safes. These safes have been tested and proven to be resistant to most break-in attempts using common tools. The number at the end of the rating states how long the safe can withstand the attempt. For example, a UL TL-30 rated safe can withstand break-in attempts using standard hand tools for at least 30 minutes by a professional that knows what they’re doing.
Fire ratings work similarly. The most common classification is also from Underwriters Laboratory, and each class is assigned a time. Fire safes can withstand up to four hours in a furnace reaching up to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit, while basic home fire safes can withstand 30 minutes at 1550 degrees.
